But if dogs could choose for themselves, many of them would choose wet food instead. Dogs do not think about economy or durability. For them, it is about the food having lots of flavor and aroma, and that they get the benefit of eating it. At those points, wet food scores more points than dry food.

What are the benefits of wet food?

It tastes and smells better

One of the biggest benefits of choosing wet food is that it has more flavor and aroma than dry food. Your dog will therefore have a better taste and smell experience. This can make eating time exciting again for discerning dogs or dogs who have lost their appetite.

It is easier to digest than dry food

Thanks to the soft consistency and the high water content, wet food is easier for the dog to digest. Dry food is highly processed and has a low water content, which makes it harder to digest.

It helps meet the dog’s fluid needs

As I said, wet food contains more liquid than dry food, and it can therefore help to cover the dog’s fluid needs. If your dog is not drinking enough water, wet food can help avoid dehydration as the dog will get fluid from the food. Of course, you also still need to provide water for the dog.

It is effective in preventing obesity

Wet food for dogs contains far fewer calories than dry food. It is therefore a good food choice if you have a food-loving dog and want to avoid being overweight. Wet food gives a better feeling of satiety, and at the same time your dog can eat a larger portion for the same calories as it would get from a smaller portion of dry food.

Due to the soft consistency, wet food is easier to chew than dry food. It is therefore obvious for dogs who have difficulty chewing their food – e.g. older dogs, dogs with small mouths, or dogs missing some of their teeth.

Some dog owners choose dry food over wet dog food because they think it is better for the dog’s teeth. The argument is that the dry food cleans the dog’s teeth due to the hard consistency. Others believe that dry food has no effect on tooth cleaning, and some even believe that dry food promotes dental problems because it stays in the dog’s teeth.

No matter which side you take in the debate, tooth cleaning should not be the main reason for choosing a particular type of feed. For the best way to clean your dog’s teeth will always be with a toothbrush and possibly. some dog toothpaste (never use human toothpaste!). Chewing gum and natural snacks can also be a great addition to your toothbrush if your dog gets soft food.
