5 Dog training tips and tricks

Dog training is an important part of raising a well-behaved dog. These simple tricks will teach your dog how to behave in different situations.

Use the approach: positive reinforcement

If you’re new to dog training, start with a positive reinforcement approach. It means rewarding good behaviour instead of punishing bad behaviour. It’s much easier to teach a dog to do something right than to correct them when they do something wrong.

Be consistent

Once you’ve decided what kind of training method you want to use, make sure you stick to it consistently. Do not change methods in the middle of the training session. Don’t expect results overnight either. It takes time to build a strong bond between you and your dog.

Reward good behaviour

A reward system is an effective way to teach your dog new behaviours. If you use food as a reward, make sure you give your dog enough treats so it doesn’t get hungry. Also, make sure you praise him when he does something right. This will help reinforce his good behaviour.

Don’t punish bad behaviour

It is important to understand that dogs learn through positive reinforcement. If you punish bad behaviour, your dog may associate punishment with being bad. In other words, if you yell at your dog for eating too much, she may think that yelling means she’s sick. So instead, use praise to show her how good she is.

Learn commands one at a time

Start teaching commands one at a time. This will help your dog to understand what you are trying to teach him. Say for example. “sit” first, then “stay” and then “down”. Repeat until he understands each command.
